Almost every relationship goes through times of conflict. However, it’s how you deal with these conflicts that determine the success of your relationship with your partner or spouse. Perhaps, you and your partner are dealing with trust issues stemming from infidelity or secret-keeping. Maybe, you’re just so tired of arguing all the time. It seems like everything you say is taken the wrong way and causes conflict. When you argue one, or both of you, ends up saying things that are very hurtful to get back at each other.

Perhaps you’ve already made the decision to separate and are trying to decide what to do now. You’re not sure if you want to reconcile or divorce and these big decisions are weighing on you. Or, maybe you have already gotten a divorce but you’re struggling to navigate the challenges caused by co-parenting. You want to put your kids first. However, that’s sometimes hard to do when you and your ex can’t agree on anything.

Common Reasons Couples Begin Therapy

Of course, all couples can go through times of stress and strain. When this happens, couples therapy or marriage counseling might be the right place to start. Here are some of the most common reasons people begin marriage counseling in Orlando, and beyond.

They feel disconnected or unsatisfied

Sometimes, when you’ve been with your partner for a while, it’s easy to fall into a pattern of predictability. When this happens it often feels like you’re living with a roommate rather than your partner or spouse. Furthermore, when you have children together, it’s easy to prioritize their needs and wants over connecting with your spouse. But, when you have a moment to think, or you’re laying in bed at night, you feel sad and lonely. You miss your partner and the love you once shared.

A lack of intimacy

As your relationship progresses and you age, you’re likely to go through periods of time in your relationship where intimacy is not a priority. Or, one partner is less interested in it than the other. This is very common, especially during the early years of parenthood. After all, you’re exhausted, stressed, and overwhelmed. So, being intimate is just not something you’re interested in. However, intimacy is an important part of a relationship. So, you’d like to work on rekindling the romance and intimate feelings you once shared with your partner.

Parenting or Co-parenting

Parenting challenges are common struggles for many couples whether they are together or not. Perhaps, you and your partner or spouse disagree on certain aspects of raising your children and this causes conflict. You want to work together and do what’s best for your kids, but that’s easier said than done.

Trust issues and infidelity

When you feel like you can’t trust your partner, then you’re constantly left questioning everything they say and do. You want more than anything to trust each other again, but you’re not sure how to quiet that inner voice in your head that makes you suspicious.

Maybe, you or your partner has been unfaithful. Now, you have to decide if your relationship can be repaired or if there’s too much hurt and it’s best to separate. But, this decision is complicated, and you’re struggling with it.

Poor Communication and high conflict

You can’t talk to your partner. In fact, it often feels like you’re walking on eggshells around them. You’re tired of all the arguments. They are mentally and physically draining. But, you’re not sure how to talk to them peacefully anymore because you’re always on guard against the next fight.

Relationship Challenges Are Isolating and Upsetting

When your relationship is on the rocks or stagnant, you may feel very lonely. Even when your friends gripe about their spouse, you don’t speak up because you don’t really want anyone to know how bad things have gotten. You try and put on a brave face, but inside you feel broken and lost.

But, help is available. Couples counseling is designed to strengthen and improve your relationship. Or, it can help you process and work through those questions of “what’s next?” You don’t have to accept less from your relationship than you deserve. Your relationship can get better.

My Approach to Couples Therapy and Marriage Counseling in Orlando, FL

I offer my clients a safe and non-judgemental place to discuss their relationship challenges. I want both partners to have the opportunity to express themselves. It’s important to me that everyone feels heard and respected during our sessions. During counseling with me, I will not take sides, and will not show any bias towards one person.

We will spend some time during our counseling sessions discussing your past. This includes looking at possible things or events that are triggering your relationship insecurities or challenges. We will also talk about what’s happening in your relationship right now. I want to know what’s going well, and what’s not. Being able to identify your strengths and weaknesses will help me guide your treatment plan.

Then, we will work on learning new ways to improve your communication with your partner and handle conflict appropriately. After learning these skills, I may give you some outside work or activities to complete between sessions. This will help you and your partner engage with each other in a healthy way and increase your overall desire and intimacy.

My hope is that by getting couples therapy or marriage counseling in Orlando with me, you will feel like you can trust your partner again. You will feel comfortable being open with them and trust that your needs will be met. I hope you will learn communication skills that improve the level of intimacy in your relationship and reduce conflict. I also hope you will have new tools to use when conflict does arise so it doesn’t escalate and become detrimental to your relationship.

My goal for therapy is you will feel like you’re a part of a team that’s working on improving your relationship through healthy communication. This will allow you and your partner to develop more respect and admiration for each other which offers you a renewed sense of hope for your relationship. Ultimately, I want the couples I work with to feel happy, secure, and fulfilled in their relationship.
